The Burning Bush and the 9-to-5: Finding God in the Routine
Scripture: Exodus 3:1–12
Several years ago, I visited Turkey—a beautiful country steeped in biblical history, from Ephesus to Mt. Ararat. But one of my most memorable moments happened while waiting in a mundane customs line. I noticed the guy ahead of me looked familiar. When he turned to snap a photo with an agent, it clicked: I was standing right behind former NFL running back Tiki Barber. It was a completely unexpected encounter in the middle of a routine travel day.
The Bible is full of these unexpected encounters. Often, we assume God only speaks during "mountain-top experiences"—altar calls, church retreats, or moments of sacred silence. But scripture shows us that God routinely crashes into our ordinary, daily routines to deliver His biggest callings.
Holy Ground on a Regular Tuesday
When we meet Moses in Exodus 3, he isn't fasting on a mountain or praying in a temple. He is working his day job—herding sheep on the "backside of the desert." He was dusty, smelled like livestock, and was likely preoccupied with finding grass for a stubborn flock. To Moses, it was just another Tuesday.
Yet, right there in the middle of the grit and routine, God set a bush on fire.
By telling Moses to take off his sandals, God wasn't just demanding reverence; He was showing him that the ground he was already standing on was holy.
We often miss our calling because we are waiting for a lightning bolt while God is trying to interrupt our grocery shopping, our morning commute, or our workday. There is no such thing as a "secular" moment when you serve a sovereign God. Whether it is an oil-stained garage floor, a corporate office, or a messy nursery—if God is there, it is holy ground. Your routine isn't a distraction from your ministry; it is the very place God intends to reveal His glory.
The "Who Am I?" PowerPoint Presentation
When God interrupts Moses' routine with a massive assignment—to confront Pharaoh and deliver Israel from slavery—Moses immediately shifts into damage control. He creates a five-point presentation on why God has the wrong guy.
If you've ever made excuses to avoid stepping out in faith, you'll recognize his strategies:
The Inadequacy Defense ("Who am I?"): Moses tells God to check his LinkedIn. He’s a fugitive shepherd who smells like goats.
God’s Response: "I will be with you." God doesn't argue with Moses' resume; He just offers Himself as the ultimate "plus one."
The Ignorance Tactic ("What is Your Name?"): Moses claims he hasn't taken the "Getting to Know God 101" course yet and won't know what credentials to show the elders.
God’s Response: "I AM WHO I AM." God gives His essence, not a theology degree. He is the present tense—everything Moses needs, whenever he needs it.
The Fear Card ("They will not believe me"): Moses worries about his personal brand and getting laughed out of Egypt.
God’s Response: God turns Moses' staff into a snake and his hand leprous, proving that He provides the authority to back up the message.
The Inability Excuse ("I am not eloquent"): Moses claims he is slow of speech and lacks the charisma needed for public speaking.
God’s Response: "Who gave human beings their mouths?" God built the hardware. He doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called.
The Blunt Truth ("Please send someone else"): Running out of logic, Moses admits the real issue: his heart isn't in it.
God’s Response: While God’s anger burns, His grace provides. He gives Moses his brother Aaron as a partner, but the assignment stands.
The Reality Check: Your "buts" and "what ifs" are no match for God's "I AM."
Your Resume vs. God's Promise
If Moses had submitted his resume to a modern headhunter—noting a dropped-out Egyptian prince education, forty years of chasing sheep, and a fugitive legal status—it would have been shredded immediately.
But God doesn't look for subject matter experts. He looks for a "Yes."
| The World's Expectations | God's Provision |
| Smartest person in the room | The Source of Wisdom stands next to you |
| The bravest leader | The Lion of Judah is your backup |
| A perfect strategic map | A personal Guide walking with you |
Knowing that God is with us takes the pressure off our shoulders. Our confidence doesn't come from buffing up our spiritual resumes; it comes entirely from His promise: "I will." When God says "I will," nothing can stop it.
Just as Moses was called to deliver Israel from physical bondage, we are called to point people to Jesus, who delivers us from the slavery of sin. God is constantly looking to use ordinary people in the middle of ordinary days to accomplish extraordinary things.
The phone is ringing, and the encounter is waiting. Will you answer the call?
